Investigation of Affective Temperaments in Pregnant Women with Hyperemesis Gravidarum
Erson AKSU
Article Type: Research

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to compare affective temperaments between pregnant women diagnosed with HG and healthy pregnant women and to determine whether HG is related to prodromes of affective disorders.

Methods: According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 40 pregnant women with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) were included in the study. Additionally, 58 age-matched healthy pregnant women were included in the study as a control group. The Temperament Assessment Scale of the Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Automatic Questionnaire (TEMPS-A) and the State-Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI-1 and STAI-2) were applied to the participants.

Results: STAI-1 and STAI-2 scores were higher in the HG group compared to the control group (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). Depressive temperament and anxious temperament scores were found to be higher in the HG group compared to the control group (p = 0.007 and p <0.001, respectively).

Discussion: Our study is the first study examining affective temperaments in pregnant women with HG. Considering the difference of affective temperaments in patients with HG and the continuity of temperament characteristics, we consider that our study is important in terms of supporting the psychiatric background of HG. It is also thought that studies with larger samples are needed to confirm the findings of our study.
